Afrobeat icon Femi Kuti returns with his highly anticipated eleventh studio album, “Journey Through Life“, set for release in April 2025. This announcement comes with the new single “After 24 Years“, a politically charged track that critiques Nigeria’s democracy and reflects Kuti’s commitment to Afrobeat activism.
Femi Kuti and his political afrobeat message
Recorded in 2023, “After 24 Years” is a poignant critique of Nigeria’s political system, accusing the elite of failing to deliver the promised change since the country’s return to democracy in 1999. This follows “Politics Don Expose Them“, released last November, where Femi Kuti condemned politicians for manipulating citizens with tribal and religious propaganda.“‘After 24 Years’ is summarising – – said the artist – the last 24 years of our leadership in Nigeria (from 1999 to 2023). Since my track ‘Sorry Sorry’ was released in 1998, where I sang that our politicians and soldiers were one and the same, nothing changed”
For over 35 years, Femi Kuti has carried forward his father Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat legacy, evolving the genre into a more progressive and globally influential movement. “Journey Through Life” continues this tradition, blending political activism with personal storytelling.
“Journey Through Life – says Femi Kuti – is basically a summary of my life from my childhood to adulthood. All through my life family has been a solid foundation, and true to my song at the end of the day for me family is all that matters”.
An Afrobeat album about memory, family, and the future
Beyond politics, “Journey Through Life“ is an introspective album that reflects on Femi Kuti’s personal growth and the importance of family. “It is basically a summary of my life, from childhood to adulthood,“ says Kuti, emphasizing the role of family in shaping his career and values. “All through my life family has been a solid foundation, and true to my song at the end of the day for me family is all that matters”.
This theme connects to “Legacy+“, the 2021 double album released with his son Made Kuti, which earned Femi Kuti a Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Album in 2022. With “Journey Through Life“, he continues his mission of merging Afrobeat music, social justice, and personal reflection.
Femi Kuti’s new album is set to be another landmark in the Afrobeat movement, reaffirming his role as a global ambassador of Nigerian music and activism.
