African Head Charge make a triumphant comeback to On-U Sound with their inaugural album in twelve years. Entitled A Journey To Bolgatanga, the recordings are spearheaded by founding member Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, accompanied once again by his close ally and co-collaborator Adrian Sherwood at the helm. A Voyage to Bolgatanga represents a remarkable resurgence, uniting the expertise of these two maestros who, after a period of inactivity, have crafted a lavish album teeming with innovative concepts and masterfully executed finesse.
Reflecting on the interval between their previous and current records, about African Head Charge Bonjo remarks, “During the twelve-year hiatus, I have dedicated time to my family in Ghana, but my creative endeavors never ceased. I have so much pent-up inspiration to express, you comprehend what I mean? At this juncture in my life, I aspire to work while relishing moments with my loved ones. When I’m enjoying myself, I’m simultaneously fostering creativity. Happiness acts as a catalyst for heightened imagination, and the utmost joy lies in being with your family.“
Although certain sounds on this album evoke memories of past African Head Charge classics such as My Life In A Hole In The Ground and Songs Of Praise, it would be erroneous to assume that their music has remained stagnant. The virtuoso percussionist adds, “Crafting the drumming and chanting for this album was an extensive process. I have constantly encountered drummers from various tribes across Ghana—the Fante, Akim, Ga, Bolgatanga—all possessing their distinct drums. I endeavor to absorb as much knowledge as possible and amalgamate it all. It’s akin to cooking, where you blend various elements like yam, banana, and pumpkin. The ultimate taste, that’s what matters. That’s my perspective on music—combining diverse elements and savoring the end result, saying, ‘Yeah man, that tastes good. Yeah man, that sounds good.’ That’s what African Head Charge embodies: amalgamating distinct combinations and transforming them anew with Adrian’s assistance.“
Producer Adrian Sherwood concurs, stating, “It’s always about assembling the right ingredients for African Head Charge and then reveling in the process of overdubs, mixing, and achieving utter perfection. Our collaborative work has always been fruitful, but I believe this time we have achieved the greatest outcome.”
With a musical legacy spanning over four decades, African Head Charge‘s latest offering welcomes back other members from the extended musical family. Multi-instrumentalist Skip McDonald and fellow Tackhead collaborator Doug Wimbish contribute their talents to various tracks. Drummer Perry Melius, whose involvement dates back to the early ’90s, infuses a righteous rhythmic power into a trio of tunes. Additionally, there are several noteworthy new recruits, including the horn and reed expertise of Paul Booth, Richard Roswell, and David Fullwood; Ras Manlenzi and Samuel Bergliter on keys; Vince Black on guitar. Furthermore, the album features additional percussion by Shadu Rock Adu, Mensa Aka, Akanuoe Angela, and Emmanuel Okine, strings by Ivan “Celloman” Hussey, and the captivating voice of the mighty Ghetto Priest. A very special guest, King Ayisoba, one of Ghana’s preeminent kologo players, lends his vocals and showcases his dexterity on the traditional two-stringed lute.
On-U Sound will release A Trip To Bolgatanga on July 7, 2023, AHC first full-length record in 12 years.
